Artist to Watch For
In the music industry today, it’s tough to separate one artist from another. Radio hits are seemingly all about the same things, with a catchy beat, lyrics that are at best subpar (LMFAO I’m talking to you here) and an artist, that frankly, lacks depth. But every once in a while, you listen to a song that makes you think, “man, is that good. Finally, something refreshing, something different… but not so different as to be ‘weird.’” Enter, Nieve, an Emcee hailing from California (of course, where else, right?). But seriously, if you’re tired of the same old four or five hip-hop artists, each claiming himself to be a king in a music industry that is a democracy, this guy is worth checking out. I’m not hating on the hip-hop giants here, so Kanye fans you can relax if you’re getting angry, I’m just saying this guy adds a new dynamic to the industry. He released 2 albums in 2011, both of which I purchased over winter break. One is a solo album, titled “Playback,” and the other is a collaboration effort with Japanese based artist, “Cradle,” that is reminiscent of Drake and Rihanna on the beat, minus all the bull shit. Forgive my bitterness, no disrespect to either artist, but the radio has virtually destroyed any desire for me personally to ever put this song on by choice. Here’s the equation that I have for this guy so far: Lupe Fiasco - the Midwest + John Coltrane + West Coast = Nieve. With lyrics that are thoughtful and meaningful, and melodies that are, for a lack of a more fitting word, beautiful, this guy puts it all together in the booth. His strong Jazz influence can be seen at first listen to both his instrumentals and lyrical style. I recommend starting with “first Day” and expanding your horizons from there. If you like what you hear, he also released an album with Cook in 2007 titled “Away with Words.” This is another fantastic piece, with the standout song being “priceless few.” Take my suggestion: listen to it, love it, spread it. and get back to us with your own suggestions of course.
